Bengali is changing.
Right now. As you read this.

On YouTube. On Instagram reels. In Facebook comment threads. In WhatsApp forwards. A language spoken by 300 million people is being remade — one video, one caption, one meme at a time.

Feb 2026 — Aug 2027 · 18 Months

But here's the thing — who gets to decide what "correct" Bengali is?

The Bangla Akademi? University departments? Corporate media houses? Or the YouTuber in Barasat who coined a phrase that a million people now use daily?

Platform Bengali doesn't pick a side. It maps the entire terrain — from how language should be spoken to how it is spoken. And in doing so, it asks a radical question:প্ল্যাটফর্ম বেঙ্গলি প্রকল্পে আমরা কোনো পক্ষ না নিয়ে সবদিক দিয়ে বাংলা ভাষা ও সংস্কৃতির বর্তমান অবস্থা বোঝার চেষ্টা করছি।

What if platform creators are not just entertainers — but arts practitioners reshaping a living language?

Think about it this way —

A Bengali roasting channel uses expletives and local slangs in a single sentence — and their audience relates to it. The standardised genteel bhadralok tongue would forbid these words from being used in public.

An Instagrammer invents a portmanteau mixing Bengali and English that gets picked up by thousands within a week.

A Facebook writer deploys culturally-specific references that no machine translator can parse — and that's precisely the point.

Sunday Suspense creates an entire audio-literary ecosystem that rewrites the rules of Bengali storytelling for the digital age.

These aren't just "content." They're acts of vernacular creativity — tacit knowledge of cultural codes, linguistic choices, and community-specific references deployed to build audience communities within platform-driven digital economies.

Project Framework

Three Engines of Language Mapping

The project identifies three agents of linguistic change, arranged across a spectrum. Each represents a different relationship to language, standardisation, and digital culture.

Top-Down Approach
The Gatekeepers

Those who define how Bengali should be spoken — the traditional gatekeepers of linguistic legitimacy. They codify grammar, set norms, and police the boundaries of "correct" Bengali.

Seven Instruments of Inquiry

Each instrument engages one or more engines. Together, they produce a composite cartography of Bengali in the platform era.

Inaugural DH Lecture
Contextualising DH in Bhashasphere · Online · 1 Day

A leading Digital Humanities professor situates the project within the broader landscape of Indian vernaculars — using Meenakshi Mukherjee's concept of "Bhasha" languages as the entry point.

Inaugural Workshop
Ethics of Researching Social Media

An expert-led workshop on the policy frameworks and ethical considerations for working with social media as a research object — from informed consent and data privacy to platform terms of service and the politics of scraping digital cultures.

Monthly Lecture Series
12 Speakers · 12 Months · All Three Engines

The only deliverable that bridges the entire spectrum — editors and media house veterans alongside academics alongside YouTubers and Instagrammers. A year-long conversation across all three engines.

YouTube Creator Interviews
10 In-Person · Qualitative Research

Deep-dive interviews examining linguistic registers, code-switching, platform adaptations, and the use of AI in Bengali content production — with particular attention to the pandemic-era shifts that accelerated vernacular digital culture between 2020 and 2025.

5-Day Translation Workshop
Bengali: Machine Translation & AI · Intensive

What happens when you run Bengali through machine translation systems? Where does the machine fail — and what does that failure reveal about the language itself? Culminates in a comprehensive MT evaluation report.

One-Day Hybrid Academic Conference
Platform Bengali: Technology & Vernacular in the Digital Age

The culminating event. All three engines converge — scholars, institutional voices, and digital practitioners — to present research, debate findings, and chart future directions.

IFA

About IFA

The India Foundation for the Arts (IFA) is an independent, nationwide, not-for-profit organisation that makes grants and implements projects across research, practice, and education in the arts and culture in India. Set up as a Public Charitable Trust in 1993, IFA began making grants and implementing projects in 1995. Since then, it has supported and implemented over 850 projects, disbursing over ₹38.65 crore (USD 4.64 million) across the country.

IFA believes that the arts and culture are essential to individual and community lives, and for a more equitable and just world. As a facilitator, catalyst, and provocateur in the field, IFA supports critical investigations, explorations, and experiments that push boundaries of knowledge and practice, challenge dominant narratives, and speak truth to power — with a particular emphasis on encouraging work in Indian languages other than English.

The outcomes of IFA-supported projects — as books, films, performances, exhibitions, games, websites, and archival materials — circulate in the public domain through showcases, presentations, seminars, screenings, lecture demonstrations, and festivals, helping widen access and encouraging broader participation in the arts.

Project Bhashascope

Platform Bengali (2020–2025) represents a specific research initiative bounded by its IFA grant period and scope. However, the digital repository website www.bhashascope.in is designed as a lasting infrastructure that transcends these temporal and funding constraints.

The name Bhashascope (ভাষাস্কোপ) serves as an expansive umbrella that houses Platform Bengali while promising a future beyond it. Just as a telescope or microscope extends human vision into realms otherwise invisible, Bhashascope extends our vision into the living, evolving landscape of language in the realm of the digital.

Key Conceptual Foundations

Continuity Beyond Grant Cycles

While Platform Bengali is constrained by its 18-month implementation timeline, Bhashascope establishes a permanent home for ongoing inquiry.

Breaking Disciplinary Barriers

Bhashascope is designed to transcend traditional boundaries — Arts and Science, Quantitative and Qualitative, Academic and Practitioner knowledge.

Adaptive Sustainability

With funding, different projects exploring diverse aspects of language evolution. Without funding, a community-driven resource crisscrossing boundaries.

Cross-Community Vision

Bhashascope is not limited to Bengali alone. The infrastructure supports exploration across languages and communities.

Relationship to Platform Bengali

Platform Bengali is the first major research initiative under Bhashascope. It establishes the methodology, ethical frameworks, and documentation standards that will guide future work. When Platform Bengali concludes, its outputs become permanent resources within Bhashascope, while the platform itself remains open for future investigations — whether funded or community-driven.
